MATHEMATICAL FORMULAMethod A: Face Area
N_order = ceil[ (A_project / A_paver) × (1 + W_waste) ]

The required order pieces (N_order) equals the geometric surface area divided by the active paver coverage area, increased by your selected cutting waste allowance and rounded up to the nearest whole paver stone.

MATHEMATICAL FORMULAPaver Unit Quantity Formula
Quantity = ceil( (Total Area / Unit Area) × (1 + Waste Factor) )

Nominal Face Area = (Length × Width) ÷ 144. When tight joint pitches are factored, Installed Modular Area = ((Length + Joint) × (Width + Joint)) ÷ 144.

Variable Legend

Total Area:
Calculated surface area of the project footprint (sq ft)
Unit Area:
Nominal face area (L × W) or installed modular area ((L + Joint) × (W + Joint)) (sq ft)
Waste Factor:
Allowance for edge cuts, diagonal trimming, and handling breakage (typically 5%–15%) (decimal)

CMHA & Industry Standards

  • ASTM C936/C936M-26: Standard Specification for Solid Concrete Interlocking Paving Units (minimum 8,000 psi compressive strength, <= 5% absorption).
  • ASTM C902 / C1272: Standard Specifications for Pedestrian and Light Traffic Paving Brick.
  • CMHA Tech Spec 2: Construction of Interlocking Concrete Pavements (laying guidelines).

Core Assumptions

  • Pavers are laid on a uniform, compacted dense-graded aggregate base and a nominal 1-inch uncompacted bedding layer using sand meeting applicable ASTM C33/C33M-24a requirements.
  • Waste factors are planning assumptions: 5% for simple rectangles with running bond, 10% for diagonal / herringbone patterns, 15% for curved borders.
  • Standard manufacturer pallets typically package 90 to 120 square feet (Belgard, Unilock, Cambridge, Techo-Bloc).

Rounding & Purchase Logic

  • Individual unit counts are rounded UP (ceil) to the nearest integer.
  • Order quantities are rounded UP to the nearest layer or whole pallet packaging unit when pallet ordering is enabled.

Scope Limitations

  • Multi-size modular combo systems (e.g. 3-piece combo packs) require pattern ratio weighting calculated in the Layout Calculator.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many pavers I need for my project?
To determine how many pavers you need: (1) Calculate your project area in square feet (Length × Width for rectangles, π × r² for circles, or 0.5 × Base × Height for triangles). (2) Calculate the face area of one paver in square feet: (Length in inches × Width in inches) ÷ 144. (3) Divide the total project area by the paver face area to find raw zero-waste units. (4) Add a 5% to 15% cutting waste allowance depending on pattern and border cuts, then round up to the nearest whole stone.
How many pavers are in a square foot?
The number of pavers per square foot depends on the individual stone dimensions. Divide 144 square inches by the paver face area in square inches. Standard US Holland 4" × 8" pavers yield 4.5 pavers per sq ft (144 / 32). 6" × 9" Plaza pavers yield 2.67 pavers per sq ft (144 / 54). 6" × 6" pavers yield 4.0 per sq ft, and 12" × 12" architectural slabs require exactly 1.0 paver per sq ft.
What is the difference between Nominal Face Area (Method A) and Installed Module Area (Method B)?
Nominal Face Area (Method A) multiplies paver length by width, representing the stone's pure top surface. Installed Module Area (Method B) includes the joint spacer gap by calculating (Length + Joint) × (Width + Joint). For tight sand joints (1/16" to 1/8"), difference in piece count is minimal (~2% to 4%). However, for wide joints (1/4" to 1/2"+), Method B accurately prevents over-purchasing by accounting for joint volume.
How much extra paver waste allowance should I order?
Paver waste allowance is a user-selected planning input based on project shape, border complexity, and laying pattern. Common selections include: 5% for simple rectangular footprints with straight running bond patterns; 10% for 45-degree herringbone layouts, diagonal patterns, or stepped perimeters; and 15% for freeform curves, circular patios, or intricate perimeter borders requiring extensive diamond saw cutting. PaverPlan starts with 0% so you can select the allowance appropriate to your project.
How many square feet and pieces are on a standard pallet of pavers?
Commercial paver pallets from major US manufacturers (such as Belgard, Unilock, Cambridge, and Techo-Bloc) typically contain 90 to 120 square feet per pallet (averaging 100 sq ft). For standard 4" × 8" Holland stones, a pallet typically contains 450 to 480 pieces arranged in 8 to 10 layers, weighing approximately 3,000 to 3,500 lbs.
How do I calculate pavers for an L-shaped patio or multiple rectangular sections?
Our calculator decomposes L-shaped footprints into two non-overlapping orthogonal rectangles (Section 1: Length 1 × Width 1; Section 2: Length 2 × Width 2) and sums their areas without double-counting the shared seam. For complex multi-section layouts, add each rectangular section independently to calculate the aggregate project square footage.
