Paver & Patio Cost Estimator (Transparent Decoupled Pricing)

PaverPlan performs the exact takeoff geometry and arithmetic. Prices are user-entered inputs reflecting your specific contractor quotes or local supplier material rates. PaverPlan never hard-codes fake national prices or assumptions.

Grand Total = Project Subtotal + Contingency + Sales Tax

Prices are user/contractor inputs and are never hard-coded. Quantities are calculated from verified engineering standards or manual user takeoffs. Waste allowances and ordering increments are applied once during takeoff and are not compounded during pricing.

Variable Legend

Quick Subtotal:
Project Area (sq ft) × User Cost per Sq Ft (USD)
Itemized Subtotal:
Σ(Material Line Costs) + Σ(Labor Lines) + Σ(Equipment/Site Prep/Delivery/Custom) (USD)
Contingency:
Project Subtotal × User-Selected Contingency Rate (default 0%) (USD)
Sales Tax:
Configured Taxable Base (Materials, Project, or Custom) × User Tax Rate (USD)

CMHA & Industry Standards

  • ASTM C936/C936M-26: Solid Concrete Interlocking Paving Units (dimensional and compressive standards).
  • ASTM D2940/D2940M-20: Graded Aggregate Base Specifications.
  • ASTM C33/C33M-24a: Concrete Bedding Sand Gradation Standards.
  • CMHA Tech Note 2 / 3 / 5: Construction Guidelines, Edge Restraints, and Joint Sand Stabilization.

Core Assumptions

  • All unit costs, labor rates, rental fees, and tax percentages are user-entered inputs reflecting specific local supplier and contractor quotes.
  • Waste allowances are applied strictly once during quantity takeoff; unit pricing multiplies purchase quantities directly without secondary waste factors.
  • Contingency is calculated on the pre-tax project subtotal and does not compound on itself.
  • Sales tax treatment is configurable (materials-only, entire project, or custom taxable amount) to accommodate local tax jurisdiction requirements.

Rounding & Purchase Logic

  • Monetary arithmetic is computed with full floating-point precision and formatted at display boundaries to 2 decimal places (cents) or nearest whole dollar for high-level summaries.
  • Purchase quantities (paver units, pallets, aggregate tons, sand bags, edging strips) respect the discrete ordering increments defined in the material takeoff engines.

Scope Limitations

  • PaverPlan does not provide default, average, or real-time regional market prices; estimates depend entirely on user-entered pricing data.
  • Site-specific access limitations, high-slope terracing, retaining walls, and utility relocations must be entered as custom line items.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I estimate the cost of a paver project?
To estimate a paver project cost accurately: (1) Determine your project surface area and footprint geometry using your measured dimensions. (2) Choose your estimating approach: Use Quick Estimate if you have an installed or project-level price per square foot from a contractor or supplier bid. Use Itemized Estimate to build a budget component-by-component across pavers, crushed stone base, bedding sand, polymeric joint sand, edge restraints, labor, equipment rentals, delivery, disposal, and custom items. (3) Enter your local material quotes and contractor rates into the calculator. (4) Add an optional contingency reserve (e.g., 5%–15%) and configure your local sales tax rate.
Why doesn't PaverPlan provide a default paver price or national average?
Material prices, freight fees, equipment rentals, and trade labor rates vary widely by geographic region, site accessibility, local quarry availability, and market conditions. Publishing a single 'national average' or hard-coding a static price would produce misleading estimates. PaverPlan provides the verified engineering takeoff mathematics and financial arithmetic while allowing you to enter current, actual prices from your local suppliers and contractors.
What is the difference between Quick Estimate and Itemized Estimate modes?
Quick Estimate calculates a high-level budget based on a single overall rate per square foot (Project Area × Entered Cost/Sq Ft + Contingency + Tax). It is best when evaluating preliminary rough budgets or working with turnkey contractor square-foot quotes. Itemized Estimate calculates exact quantities for each individual component (pavers, aggregate base, sands, edging, labor hours/rates, machinery rentals, dump fees) and multiplies each by its specific unit price to produce a transparent line-by-line budget.
How is paver material cost calculated without double waste?
In the Itemized mode, paver quantities are calculated with your selected cutting and handling waste allowance (typically 5%–15%) once during takeoff. If pricing by unit, the unit price multiplies the total purchase pieces directly. If pricing per square foot of material coverage, the rate applies to the purchased material coverage (including waste) once. Waste is never applied a second time during monetary calculations, preventing artificial budget inflation.
How should I enter installation labor?
PaverPlan supports three common labor pricing models: (1) Price per square foot: multiplies your total paved area by an installed trade square-foot rate. (2) Hourly labor: multiplies estimated crew hours by an hourly rate. (3) Fixed quote: allows entering a lump sum labor agreement. If you are completing the project as a DIY installation, you can disable the labor category or leave it unpriced to calculate materials and tool rental expenses only.
How does project contingency work in the budget?
A contingency reserve is an unallocated financial buffer added to account for unexpected site conditions, subgrade soil instability, underground obstructions, or minor design revisions. In PaverPlan, contingency defaults to 0% and is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax project subtotal. It is calculated directly on the subtotal and does not compound on itself.
How should sales tax be configured?
Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and transaction type. PaverPlan allows you to enable tax, enter your local rate, and explicitly select your applicable taxable base: Materials Subtotal, Pre-Contingency Project Subtotal, Subtotal + Contingency, or a Custom Taxable Amount. PaverPlan does not give legal or tax advice.
What costs are commonly overlooked in paver project planning?
Frequently overlooked expenses include: (1) Quarry and flatbed freight delivery drop charges, (2) Subgrade excavation soil haul-away and landfill dump fees, (3) Equipment rentals (vibratory plate compactor and wet masonry saw), (4) Geotextile separation fabric over soft clay subgrades, (5) Anchoring spikes for edge restraints, and (6) Minor site access modifications (e.g., temporary fence removal).
Does this calculator replace a contractor quote?
No. PaverPlan is a planning and budgeting tool designed to help homeowners, planners, and contractors model project quantities and test financial scenarios. It does not replace an on-site evaluation, structural engineering review, or formal written contractor proposal that accounts for specific subgrade soil conditions, slope, drainage, underground utilities, and property access.
