Polymeric Joint Sand Calculator (Joint Stabilization)

This calculator estimates polymeric sand swept into vertical joints between installed pavers to lock units, resist erosion, and deter weed growth. It is strictly separate from bedding sand (the 1.0-inch coarse ASTM C33 sand layer screeded underneath pavers) and crushed gravel base. For the setting bed layer, use our Paver Sand Calculator.

Two Explicit Modes
Important Methodology Separation: There is no universal "one bag covers X sq ft" constant. Mode A applies product-specific packaging rates; Mode B provides a geometric volume estimate. These methods use independent assumptions and are never averaged or combined.

MATHEMATICAL FORMULADual-Mode Polymeric Joint Sand Estimation Equations
Mode A: Bags = ceil( (Area / Coverage) × (1 + Allowance) ) | Mode B: f_joint = [(L+J)(W+J) - LW] / [(L+J)(W+J)], Joint Vol = Area × f_joint × Depth

Mode A performs direct packaging division based on manufacturer technical data sheet coverage ratings. Mode B models the installed repeating rectangular module ((L+J)(W+J)) to derive the joint area fraction without double-counting shared borders, then optionally converts joint volume to weight using user/product bulk density when supplied.

CMHA & Industry Standards

  • CMHA PAV-TEC-005 (formerly Tech Spec 5): Cleaning, Sealing and Joint Sand Stabilization of Interlocking Concrete Pavement (general industry guidance on joint sand stabilization; proprietary dimensions and bag coverage are manufacturer-specified).
  • Manufacturer Product Technical Data Sheets (TDS) for proprietary polymeric formulations.

Core Assumptions

  • Mode A relies strictly on manufacturer technical data sheet specifications corresponding to the user's specific paver dimensions and joint dimensions.
  • Mode B assumes a regular rectangular repeating module ((L+J)(W+J)) as an engineering field approximation. Joint width and joint fill depth are user/product inputs.
  • Bulk density in Mode B is an optional user/product planning parameter. No universal polymeric-sand density is assumed when omitted; in-place joint volume is provided directly.
  • Polymeric joint sand must NEVER be used as a loose bedding layer beneath pavers.

Rounding & Purchase Logic

  • Full floating-point precision maintained throughout intermediate geometric calculations. Final purchase recommendation rounded UP (ceil) to the nearest whole bag.

Scope Limitations

  • Mode B repeating module assumes a regular rectangular repeating grid. It does not exactly model herringbone boundary effects, basketweave, random ashlar, multi-size modular patterns, irregular natural-stone layouts, fan patterns, curved layouts, border-course geometry, or cut-paver boundary effects.
  • Polymeric-sand products have product-specific requirements for joint width, joint depth, surface preparation, compaction, watering/activation, temperature, weather, and curing. Follow the current instructions for the product being used.
  • Many polymeric-sand products require the pavement surface and joints to meet specific moisture conditions before application. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions to reduce installation problems such as residue or haze.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

How much polymeric sand do I need?
To estimate polymeric sand accurately, determine your project surface area and use either: (1) Mode A (Manufacturer Coverage): Divide your total square footage by the specific coverage rating (sq ft per bag) listed on your product packaging for your exact paver dimensions and joint gap, then add an optional user-selected ordering allowance (e.g., 0%–15%). (2) Mode B (Joint Geometry Model): Calculate the joint plan area fraction using the installed repeating module formula ((L+J)(W+J) - LW) / ((L+J)(W+J)), multiply by project area and joint fill depth to obtain void volume in cubic feet or cubic yards, and optionally convert to weight and bags using product-specific bulk density and bag weight when available.
How many square feet does a bag of polymeric sand cover?
There is no single universal coverage constant for polymeric sand. A standard 50-lb bag can cover anywhere from 20 to 120+ square feet depending on paver face dimensions, joint width, and joint fill depth. For example, standard 4" × 8" brick pavers with narrow 1/8" joints typically cover 40 to 65 sq ft per bag, whereas large 12" × 12" or 16" × 16" architectural slabs have far fewer joints per square foot and can cover 80 to 120+ sq ft per bag. Conversely, thick cobblestones or wide 3/8" to 1/2" joints may cover only 20 to 35 sq ft per bag. Always check your specific product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS).
Why does polymeric sand coverage vary so widely?
Coverage varies due to three primary geometric and material factors: (1) Paver Face Dimensions: Smaller pavers create significantly more linear feet of perimeter joints per square foot of pavement than large slabs. (2) Joint Gap Width: Doubling joint width from 1/8" to 1/4" doubles the void cross-section. (3) Joint Fill Depth: Thicker pavers (e.g. 80mm vehicular vs 60mm pedestrian) require greater vertical sand volume down to the bedding layer. Product-specific sand grain gradation and packaging density also influence coverage.
Does joint width affect polymeric sand usage?
Yes, joint width has a major direct impact on polymeric sand consumption. Widening joint gaps from 1/8 inch (0.125") to 1/4 inch (0.25") approximately doubles the required sand volume for identical paver dimensions. Use the joint width applicable to your paver system and polymeric-sand product. Wide joints (greater than 1/4" or up to 1"–2" for flagstones) require specialized high-performance or wide-joint polymer formulations to prevent washouts and polymer separation.
Does joint depth affect polymeric sand usage?
Yes. Polymeric sand fills the vertical joint gap down to the underlying screeded bedding sand according to the product and paver specifications. Standard residential pedestrian pavers are typically 2⅜ inches (60 mm) thick, while vehicular driveways use 3⅛ inch (80 mm) pavers. Filling deeper joints requires proportionally more sand by volume.
Can I use this calculator for irregular pavers or multi-size patterns?
Mode A (Manufacturer Coverage) applies directly to multi-size or modular paver systems whenever the manufacturer publishes combo-system coverage tables. Mode B (Joint Geometry Estimate) uses a single-size rectangular repeating module ((L+J)(W+J)) as an engineering field approximation. It does not explicitly model herringbone boundary effects, basketweave, random ashlar, multi-size modular patterns, irregular natural-stone layouts, fan patterns, curved layouts, border-course geometry, or cut-paver boundary effects. Manufacturer technical coverage (Mode A) remains the preferred purchasing standard.
Is polymeric sand the same as bedding sand?
No. Bedding sand and polymeric joint sand serve completely different structural functions and cannot be substituted. Bedding sand is a 1.0-inch loose, uncompacted layer of coarse washed concrete sand (ASTM C33) screeded beneath pavers to provide a level setting bed. Polymeric sand is fine graded sand blended with binding chemical polymers that is swept strictly into the top vertical joints after paver placement and activated with clean water to harden and lock the pavement field.
What installation requirements should I follow?
Polymeric-sand products have product-specific requirements for joint width, joint depth, surface preparation, compaction, watering/activation, temperature, weather, and curing. Follow the current instructions for the product being used. Many polymeric-sand products require the pavement surface and joints to meet specific moisture conditions before application. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions to reduce installation problems such as residue or haze.
